Bedding material should start off-dry. The shavings are delivered to the farm in the form of polyethylene bags and offloaded outside each chicken house. The bags are transferred onto a trolley and carted inside each chicken house. The shavings are spread uniformly over the floor to the depth requested. The farmworkers wear disposable respirators (FFP3 standard) whenever handling the bales or shavings.

The volume of bedding used is important too: if spread too thinly it cannot absorb as much moisture. The bedding is kept between 7,5cm and 10cm deep – deeper in winter when the moisture level is harder to control and to give the birds extra insulation from the cold.
